Sponges and fishes

Kalymnos island covers an area of 134,5 sq.km and according to the population census of 2011 16.179 people live permanently on the island. It is well known as the island of sponges. Local population early on turned to the sea for making ends meet, since the land was not arable and rocky mountains cover most part of it. Seeking for sponges in the sea bottom and fishing emerged into popular professions among the island’s habitants. Until now fishing in Kalymnos is widespread and you can always find fresh fish on the island.

Climbing

The rocky mountains that initially seemed as a major disadvantage fo Kalymnos’ residents turned to be attraction pole for thousands climbing lovers from all over the world. The quality of the rocky mountains as well as the mild weather of the island provide the ideal conditions for climbers.
